Part of Fortune in Astrology: Finding Your Chart's Abundance Point

The Part of Fortune reveals where you naturally find joy, abundance, and flow. Here's how to calculate it and what it means in your birth chart.

·Lumina Editorial

There is a point in your birth chart that is not a planet, not an asteroid, and not a fictional body. It has no physical existence whatsoever. It is a mathematical point, calculated entirely from the positions of three other chart factors, and yet for thousands of years, astrologers have treated it as one of the most important indicators in the entire chart. This is the Part of Fortune, also known by its Latin name, Pars Fortuna, or simply the fortune point in astrology.

The Part of Fortune points to the area of your life where you are most likely to experience joy, abundance, and effortless flow. It is where the universe seems to hand you a gift simply for being yourself. Understanding this point can shift the way you think about success, because it suggests that your greatest blessings do not always come from effort and struggle. Some of them arrive when you align with a deeper current.

If you are still learning how the pieces of your chart fit together, our guide on how to read your birth chart provides a solid foundation. What follows is everything you need to understand the Part of Fortune and how to work with it.

What Is the Part of Fortune?

The Part of Fortune is what astrologers call an "Arabic Part" or "lot" — a sensitive point in the chart calculated from the angular relationship between three chart factors. Unlike planets, which orbit in space, the Part of Fortune exists only as a degree on the zodiac wheel. It has no mass, no orbit, and no gravitational pull. What it does have is symbolic meaning derived from the three bodies used to calculate it: the Sun, the Moon, and the Ascendant.

Each of these three carries its own significance. The Sun represents your core identity, vitality, and conscious purpose. The Moon represents your emotions, instincts, and unconscious needs. The Ascendant (or Rising sign) represents the lens through which you meet the world — your body, your personality, and the path of your life. When you combine these three, you get a point that synthesizes who you are at every level: body, mind, and spirit.

The ancient astrologer Ptolemy used the Part of Fortune to assess material well-being and physical vitality. Later Hellenistic and Arabic astrologers expanded its meaning to encompass the general quality of life, the areas where one finds success, and the conditions under which a person thrives. In modern astrology, the Part of Fortune is most often interpreted as the place in your chart where you experience natural ease, satisfaction, and abundance.

The Formula Behind the Part of Fortune

The calculation differs depending on whether you were born during the day or at night. This distinction matters because the Sun and Moon play reversed roles in the formula.

For a day birth (the Sun is above the horizon, in houses 7 through 12):

Part of Fortune = Ascendant + Moon - Sun

For a night birth (the Sun is below the horizon, in houses 1 through 6):

Part of Fortune = Ascendant + Sun - Moon

All calculations are done in zodiacal degrees. If you are not comfortable working with degrees by hand, do not worry. Nearly every free birth chart calculator online will compute the Part of Fortune for you automatically. Most will also tell you whether you are a day or night birth.

The logic behind the day/night reversal is rooted in the symbolism of sect, an ancient astrological principle that assigns different roles to the Sun and Moon depending on whether the chart is diurnal (day) or nocturnal (night). In a day chart, the Sun is the sect leader and the Moon plays a supporting role. In a night chart, the Moon takes the lead. The formula for the Part of Fortune reflects this hierarchy by giving the primary luminary the subtractive role, which effectively measures the arc from the primary light to the Ascendant.

What the Part of Fortune Represents

Think of the Part of Fortune as your personal abundance antenna. It shows where life rewards you not because you grind harder, but because you are naturally tuned to receive. The sign it falls in describes the quality of that abundance. The house it occupies shows the life domain where it manifests most strongly.

The Part of Fortune is not about getting rich in a literal sense, though it can indicate material prosperity. It is more accurately described as the area of life where you feel most alive, most satisfied, and most supported. You may find that when you are operating from the energy of your Part of Fortune, things seem to click. Opportunities appear. People want to help you. You feel a sense of flow that is hard to explain.

This is also the point where your conscious purpose (Sun), emotional needs (Moon), and life direction (Ascendant) converge. When you are aligned with your Part of Fortune, these three levels of your being are working together rather than pulling in different directions. That alignment itself is a form of abundance.

How to Find the Part of Fortune in Your Birth Chart

Finding your Part of Fortune is straightforward if you use a birth chart calculator. Most online calculators, including the one on Lumina, will compute the Part of Fortune automatically. You simply need your exact birth date, time, and location.

If you want to calculate it by hand, follow these steps:

  1. Determine whether you are a day birth or a night birth. If your Sun is in houses 7 through 12 (below the Descendant and above the Ascendant, on the top half of the chart), you are a day birth. If your Sun is in houses 1 through 6, you are a night birth.
  2. Note the zodiacal degree of your Ascendant, your Moon, and your Sun. Convert each to an absolute degree (0 degrees Aries = 0, 1 degree Taurus = 31, and so on through 359 degrees Pisces).
  3. Apply the correct formula. For day births, add the Ascendant and Moon, then subtract the Sun. For night births, add the Ascendant and Sun, then subtract the Moon.
  4. If the result is greater than 360, subtract 360. If the result is negative, add 360. The resulting degree is your Part of Fortune.

Once you have the degree, look up which sign and house it falls in, and you will have your interpretation using the guides above.

The Part of Fortune and the Broader Chart

The Part of Fortune does not operate in isolation. Its meaning is enriched by the aspects it makes to other planets and points in your chart. A conjunction with Jupiter, for instance, may amplify the abundance it promises. A square from Saturn may suggest that you need patience and discipline before that abundance fully manifests. A trine from the Moon may indicate that your emotional intuition is a direct channel to your good fortune.

The Part of Fortune also has a counterpart called the Part of Spirit (or Pars Daemon), which is calculated using the reverse formula — day birth uses Asc + Sun - Moon, and night birth uses Asc + Moon - Sun. Where the Part of Fortune shows what you receive, the Part of Spirit shows what you give, your creative will, and the contribution you make to the world. Together, these two points describe a cycle of receiving and giving that runs through the heart of your chart.

Living With Your Part of Fortune

Knowing your Part of Fortune is not about sitting back and waiting for abundance to arrive. It is about recognizing where your natural current runs and learning to swim with it rather than against it. You may find that the areas of life your Part of Fortune describes have been sources of quiet satisfaction all along, even if you never labeled them as such. Or you may realize that you have been neglecting this area, pouring all your energy into other domains while the place of your greatest ease went untended.

The invitation of the Part of Fortune is to pay attention. Notice where things feel easy. Notice where you feel genuinely joyful, not because you achieved something impressive, but because the activity itself fills you up. That is the current your Part of Fortune has been pointing to all along.
